Careers at pen.dev
Help build the canvas where design, code, and AI agents work together.
What we’re building
pen.dev is a design editor for building software with AI. Work with agents on a canvas, refine the details by hand, and turn designs into code. Design files live alongside your code, so design becomes part of how you build and ship.
We’re bringing that experience to the desktop, the browser, your editor, and the command line. There’s a lot to connect: a fast canvas, thoughtful interactions, reliable agent tools, and the services that make it all work.
Generalist Engineer
Remote · Full-time
We’re looking for an engineer who enjoys taking a problem from an early idea to something people use. You’ll work across the product, follow problems wherever they lead, and help decide what to build as well as how to build it.
What you’ll do
- Own features from understanding the user’s problem through implementation, release, and iteration.
- Build and polish the design canvas and the workflows that connect it to code, across our web, desktop, and editor experiences.
- Make AI agents useful inside the product, with tools and integrations that can reliably create and edit designs.
- Work across UI, APIs, and backend services as the problem requires.
- Debug difficult issues, measure performance, and keep interactions responsive as documents grow.
What you’ll bring
- Experience shipping software that people use, with the judgment to keep solutions simple and maintainable.
- Strong TypeScript and React fundamentals, plus the curiosity to learn unfamiliar parts of the stack.
- A feel for good product design. You care about the small details, clear interactions, and how fast software feels.
- The ability to turn an open-ended problem into a focused plan, communicate tradeoffs, and follow through.
- An interest in AI-assisted development, with a habit of reviewing and testing what you ship.
Useful experience
Design tools, graphics or canvas rendering, Electron, developer tools, or AI agents and MCP. You don’t need experience in all of these; depth in one area and a willingness to work across others matter more.
